The following item is an authentic signed Gettysburg National Bank check by Gettysburg resident John Henry Culp. During the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, John Henry Culp ran a blacksmith shop with his Uncle Andrew in Gettysburg. On July 1st, 1863 he was given orders by Union Officers to provide shoeing of horses for Union Cavalry. The next day he kept his shop closed and it was looted and partially burned.
He spent most of his time driving an ambulance with his wife Dolly removing the wounded from the battlefield and taking them to field hospitals. John and his wife and friends spent most of the battle in their neighbors cellar. Dolly at one pointed crossed the street to bring back blankets and was shot at.The bullet grazed her head and she lost a spot of hair that never grew back. This check is in very good condition and is made out to John Culp by David Kendlehart.
Kendlehart was the Gettysburg Borough President and the first citizen to meet with Confederate General Jubal Early to hear his demands. John Henry endorsed the check on the reverse signing Jno. The cancellation cut slightly grazes the "C" in Culp.An extremely scarce item coming from the famous Culp family of Gettysburg.
