ORVILLE WRIGHT - CHECK SIGNED 08/19/1940 CO-SIGNED BY: KATHARINE (NIECE) WRIGHT - HFSID 14652. ON HIS 69TH BIRTHDAY, AVIATION PIONEER ORVILLE WRIGHT SENDS A CHECK TO HIS GREAT-NIECE ORVILLE WRIGHT and KATHERINE WRIGHT. Check filled out and signed: " Orville Wright ", 8x3.

Dayton, Ohio, 1940 August 19. 2446, drawn on the Winters National Bank & Trust Co.

Endorsed on verso: Pay to the order of Mrs. May, /Katharine Wright " and " Mrs. May (display is windowed to show endorsements). On the day this check was signed, Orville's 69th birthday, the Wilbur and Orville Wright Memorial was dedicated in Dayton. KATHERINE WRIGHT , who was 17 years old at the time this check was signed, was the daughter of Herbert Wright, the son of Reuchlin Wright, Orville's oldest brother. Along with his brother, Wilbur, ORVILLE WRIGHT designed and built the first motor-powered airplane and conducted its first successful flight on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The historic flight of the 12-horsepower biplane, Flyer , covered 120 feet and lasted 12 seconds. In May 1905, the Wright brothers began construction of Flyer III , the first practical airplane that could be maneuvered to turn, bank, circle and fly figure eights.

They were granted the first U. Patent for their flying machine in May 1906. Following Wilbur's death in 1912, Orville became President of the Wright Company and continued as a pioneer in the aviation industry.

Bank stamp touches the "O" and "W" of signature and writing, cancellation holes at 2 lines of writing. Stamp on verso at the A.
