Grissom was chosen, with Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee, for the first manned Apollo mission in 1967. On January 27, 1967, during a routine training exercise, a fire in the command module of Apollo 1 killed all three astronauts.
When this check was signed the first group of astronauts including Grissom, selected in April 1959, were in training. The first live passenger on a Mercury test vehicle, Sam the monkey, was launched on December 4, 1959. Cancellation holes, slightly affecting "V" of "Virgil".
