Taylor had built the 12-horsepower engine which powered the Wright brothers' first flight. Check signed: Wright Cycle Co. Wilbur and Orville had formed the Wright Cycle Company in 1892 and manufactured bicycles. In 1906, the Wright Brothers received a patent for their flying machine. Taylor was first employed by the Wrights at Dayton in 1901.
From sketches drawn by the brothers, Taylor built a four-cylinder engine, which produced 12 horsepower. It was installed in their plane and provided the necessary power to get it off the ground on December 17, 1903. Taylor built other successful engines for the Wright Brothers and assisted in building, repairing, and readying their various airplanes for flight. He assisted them in Europe and at Fort Myer, Virginia, where the airplane was successfully demonstrated for the Army.The Wright Brothers and Taylor are members of the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio.
