Hello and thanks for stopping by! Henry and signed by Joshua L. This check is fresh to the market, recently found in a flea market here in Maine. This check measures 7.5 by 3.0 inches. It has a PAID stamp from The First National Bank of Brunswick (Chamberlains hometown). The check also features a two cent US Internal Revenue stamp featuring an image of George Washington. Both stamps are dated the same day that the check was issued, 11 October 1875. This check was issued after Chamberlain's Civil War career while he was serving as the president of Bowdoin College which was also located in Brunswick. Assigned to brigade command in June 1864, he was wounded twelve days later in the assault on Petersburg. Chamberlain was promoted to Brigadier General on the spot by General Grant, then carried to the rear, where a surgeon declared that he would certainly die from the wound; he did, but not until fifty years later.
At Appomattox, Chamberlain was given the honor of commanding the troops that formally accepted the surrender of the Confederate Army. He ordered a salute to the defeated Confederate troops as they filed past, a gesture much appreciated in the South but used against him later by political foes in Maine. Condition this check is in overall fine condition. A pinhole through the 1875 date in the upper right is noted.
There are also light folds and creases noted as well as two small tears along the right edge of the check. All three dates are clearly legible and Chamberlains Joshua L.Chamberlain signature is easily read. The check displays nicely - see photo closeups for condition details.
