(September 15, 1789 - September 4, 1851) was a 19. Century American writer whose historical romances of frontier and American Indian life created a unique form of literature. He lived most of his life in Cooperstown, NY, which was founded by his father William. Prior to his writing career, he served in the U. Navy as a midshipman, which greatly influenced many of his novels and other writings.
